TERRY JELSING
BUILDING SPIRIT WALL
Spirit Wall is a collaborative art project between Terry Jelsing and members of the Spirit Lake Nation at Fort Totten, N.D.

Messy work
Fort Totten students soaked shredded paper with water and then packed the slurry into metal forms to shape the wet paper into bricks.

Collaborators of all ages
Jelsing made several trips to Four Winds Tribal School and Cankdeska Cikana Community College to make bricks with students, staff and community members.

Part of a larger project
The brickmaking sessions are part of a three-year project that brought six international artists to Fort Totten to explore Dakota/Lakota lifestyle and culture funded by the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation.

Bricklaying
Jelsing uses foam to adhere the bricks to the wall frame.
